Australian cult label Lover is once again quietly working its way to the forefront of the fashion imagination for the upcoming season, with the release of the brand’s new lookbook online. The Lover girl for SS0910 is complex and sometimes endearingly erratic, favouring bold reworked leopard print one day and muted dove-grey leather another. The excitingly varied collection speaks to those who are confident enough in their faceted identities to simultaneously revel in the differences of demure lace and attention grabbing ruby-coloured velvet. Seemingly deriving inspiration from both the wild child and the good girl, the wide-ranging ‘White Moon Rising’ collection is nevertheless anchored by Chong and Briand’s well-loved clean lines and minimalist aesthetic.

Usually it just takes seeing a good collection to shake me out of fashion boredom, and I think that the release of photos from the new Lover collection might do the trick. To tell you the truth I’ve been stalking the site ever since the teaser photo for the new collection White Moon Rising popped up, and this morning the collection finally appeared, right when I needed it. I went straight to the Southern Hemisphere Spring/Summer collection for instant summer gratification and fell in love with it. It’s filled with an updated Victorian sort of prettiness (white lace dresses, tan lace-up boots, almost mourning-esque black frills), but then it also has an edge that the last Lover collection didn’t have. Velvet in summer and pantsuits look nice, but strangely enough it’s the plain chambray pants that may be the most appealing to me.

Forget my Karen Walker craving, for summer, it’s all about the Lover leopard print. If I have to sell everything I own I’ll do it, just to make that velvet dress, the maroon leopard shorts and the mustard leopard skirt all mine; you know I’ll do it. By no means do I ever make empty threats…
